Salvia

Cook –Lawall. Remington’s Practice of Pharmacy. USA, 1936, pp: 1042-1043. Salvia is the dried leaf of Salvia officinalis L., Fam.Labiatæ. Salvia contains not more than 10 per cent of stems of the plant and not more than 2 per cent of other foreign organic matter, and yields not less than 1 per cent of volatile ether-soluble extractive, not more than 25 per cent of crude fiber, not more than 10 per cent of total ash, and not more than 1 per cent of acid-insoluble ash. It contains a terpene, and oxygenated portion, Salviol.

Uses. It is used as a condiment and an infusion of sage has been used in sore throat . dose, sixty grains (4 Gm.).
